Gulmarg has emerged as one of the favorite snowboarding destinations for people all around the world. If you are a snowboard enthusiast, Gulmarg offers the best of the best slope conditions and powder snows all around the year. Gulmarg is rated as Asia’s 5th best ski destination. It also offers a wide variety of slopes to snowboard beginning from the basic slopes to intermediate and expert level slopes.
Â
Gulmarg has it all from the steep alpine runs, pillow lines to craggy couloir feature, catering to expert snowboarders; and mild open powder bowls for intermediate and advanced riders. The bowls offer spectacular views of the Valley of Kashmir and Nanga Parbat (8,126 m). Forests of the Baba Reshi, Monkey Hill, and Tanmarg offer excellent tree snowboarding which is traversable even on bad weather days.Â
Â
One can ride the slopes every day even when the storm prevents the lifts from operating.
If you are a beginner or an intermediate-level snowboarder, a trip of 7 days should be enough.
Â
However, for an expert snowboarder who is keen on exploring higher peaks, a week-long trip would be more than sufficient.

Keeping these in mind, here are some information that will give you a comprehensive understanding of what skiing in Gulmarg is like.
The base of the Affarwat peak marks the start of the snowboarding experience. The mountain is split into two phases which are accessible by Gondola.
Â
PHASE I
It connects Gulmarg to Kongdoori and is accessible by a Gondola. From the base camp at nearly 9000 ft, the first stop is at Kongdoori meadow at a height of nearly 11000 ft. One can snowboard down right back to the village. The gondola takes about 9 minutes to reach.
Â
PHASE II
It connects Kongdoori to the Affarwat peak and can also be reached on the Gondola at a height of 13,000 ft.Â
Surrounded by glaciers, the Al-Pathar Lake near the LOC is almost a 2 km trek from here. The Gondola takes about 12 minutes to reach.
The Gondolas are well maintained and they run from 10 am to 5 pm in winter but can be shut down due to snowstorms or based on the weather conditions.
Â
CHAIRLIFT
A chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder is also available. One can either traverse the Mary’s shoulder for gentler slopes or snowboard right down from where the chairlift drops. Once you snowboard down, you can return to Gulmarg in no time. The chairlift takes about 11 minutes to reach.
Â
BUNNY SLOPES
Â
In the meadows of Gulmarg, which is usually covered with a thick blanket of snow with barely any patch of earth visible, there are bunny slopes doable for beginners. These are wide and easy slopes that are open throughout the day and also at night.
However, the two-button lifts are only open for skiers and a snowboarder has to carry their board all the way up to the top to ride back down. You can hire a porter to carry your board up to the top at a reasonable rate for the day and the trip to the top is a minor inconvenience that you forget once you snowboard down the slopes again. Significantly, it adds to great cardio for the day as well.Â
Â
The snowboarding season in Gulmarg is open from November to late March every year.

An avalanche patrol team/ Ski patrol team works all around the clock on Phase I and Phase II as these mountains are highly avalanche-prone. It is suggestive that one gets an instructor from the region for smooth sailing even for expert skiers.
