The Classic Himalayan Freeride Expedition

Designed for advanced backcountry riders and splitboarders, this 10-day itinerary provides the critical time needed to properly acclimatize, track Himalayan storm cycles, and push deep into the unpatrolled zones of Mount Apharwat. For eight full days, our senior mountain guides will lead you beyond the boundary ropes to hunt massive open bowls, steep alpine ridges, and untouched storm-day tree lines. This trip is a complete, zero-friction alpine operation, supported by premium ski-in/ski-out logistics and culminating with a celebratory night on a luxury Dal Lake houseboat.
The Expedition Itinerary
Daily objectives are dictated by live weather, snowpack stability, and group fatigue. Your senior guide will adjust this framework to ensure optimal safety and snow quality.
- 1
Day 1
Arrival, Gear Fitting & Safety Protocol
Your private 4x4 vehicle meets you at Srinagar International Airport (SXR). Enjoy a scenic, two-hour climb into the Himalayas to your centrally heated, premium hotel in Gulmarg (2,650 m). After checking in, the afternoon is dedicated to gear fitting and a mandatory, hands-on avalanche safety and companion rescue briefing with your senior guide.
- 2
Day 2
Phase 1 Shake-Down & Acclimatization Laps
Sleeping at 2,650m requires physical adjustment. Day 2 focuses on acclimatization and getting your ski legs back. We use the Phase 1 Gondola and local chairlifts to ride the lower mountain powder stashes. This allows your guide to assess the group’s riding style, pace, and backcountry proficiency before moving into higher-consequence terrain.
- 3
Days 3 & 4
Phase 2 Alpine Bowls & Gravity Riding
We push into the high alpine. Taking the Gondola to Phase 2 (3,980 m), we focus on massive, gravity-fed descents down the sweeping, open bowls of Mount Apharwat. We will session the vast alpine terrain, dropping 900 m to 1,500 m of vertical per run, returning to the mid-station for rapid, efficient laps in deep, dry snow.
- 5
Days 5 & 6
The High Alpine Ridges & The Shark Fin
As your lungs adapt to the 4,000 m air, we introduce short boot packs and skinning tracks. Leaving the Gondola behind, your guide will navigate you across the high alpine ridges to access some of Gulmarg’s most infamous and untouched terrain, including the steep, technical chutes of the Shark Fin.
- 7
Days 7 & 8
Deep Valley Descents & Tree Lines
We transition to long-format backcountry routes. On clear days, this means tackling massive descents that take you out of bounds entirely, dropping deep into the Drung Valley, where our private 4x4 vehicles will be waiting at the valley bottom for your recovery. If a heavy storm cycle rolls in and closes the upper lifts, we pivot immediately to world-class, deep powder tree-skiing through the old-growth pines of the Babareshi and Tangmarg forests.
- 9
Day 9
The Final Descent & Dal Lake Transition
After one final morning session on the mountain, we load the vehicles and descend from the snowline into Srinagar. You’ll check into a luxury, traditional cedar houseboat floating on the mirror-like waters of Dal Lake. The expedition concludes with a private Kashmiri bonfire and a celebratory Wazwan (traditional Kashmiri feast) under the stars.
- 10
Day 10
Departure
Enjoy a quiet, restorative morning on the lake, complete with Kashmiri Kahwa (traditional saffron tea), before your private transfer takes you to Srinagar Airport for your onward journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Practical answers for gear, guide ratios, insurance, and touring effort.
As an advanced rider, we highly recommend bringing your own primary freeride setup (skis/board and boots) for maximum comfort and performance in high-consequence terrain. However, if you prefer to travel light, high-end, powder-specific equipment is available for rent at the resort for an additional fee. (Note: Your mandatory Avalanche Safety Kit is already fully included in the package price).
Safety, fluid pacing, and line choice are our top priorities. We keep our freeride expeditions strictly capped at a maximum 1:4 guide-to-client ratio. This ensures efficient movement through avalanche terrain, personalized route selection, and tight group dynamics.
Yes. Standard travel insurance policies typically exclude out-of-bounds or backcountry winter sports. You’re required to hold a policy that explicitly covers off-piste/backcountry skiing and snowboarding, as well as emergency mountain evacuation, specifically factoring in the 4,390m altitude of Mount Apharwat.
The Gondola provides massive lift access to vertical, dropping you directly at 3,980 m. However, to access the absolute best, untouched snow and remote ridges (such as the Shark Fin), short boot packs or skinning (15 to 45 minutes) are frequently utilized. Your guide will tailor the exact mix of lift-accessed gravity riding and touring to your group's fitness level and current snow conditions.
