From being a summer escape of the British 100 years ago, Gulmarg has emerged as one of the favorite ski destinations for people all around the world. If you are a ski enthusiast, Gulmarg offers the best of the best slope conditions and powder snows all around the year. Gulmarg is also rated as Asia’s 5th best ski destination. It also offers a wide variety of slopes to ski for beginners, intermediate and expert level skiers.
If you are a beginner or an intermediate-level skier, a trip of 7 days is recommended.Â
Â
However, for an expert skier who is keen on exploring higher peaks, a week-long trip would be more than sufficient.

Keeping these in mind, here are some information that will give you a comprehensive understanding of what skiing in Gulmarg is like.
The base of the Affarwat peak marks the start of the skiing experience. The mountain is split into two phases which are accessible by Gondola.
Â
PHASE I
It connects Gulmarg to Kongdoori and is accessible by a Gondola. From the base camp at nearly 9000 ft, the first stop is at Kongdoori meadow at a height of nearly 11000 ft. One can ski down right back to the village. The gondola takes about 9 minutes to reach.
Â
PHASE II
It connects Kongdoori to the Affarwat peak at a height of 13,000 ft. It can also be reached on the Gondola.Â
Â
Surrounded by glaciers, the Al-Pathar Lake near the LOC is almost a 2 km trek from here. The Gondola takes about 12 minutes to reach. The Gondolas are well maintained and they run from 10 am to 5 pm in winter but can be shut down due to snowstorms or based on the weather conditions.
Â
CHAIRLIFT
A chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder is also available. One can either traverse the Mary’s shoulder for gentler slopes or ski right down from where the chairlift drops. Once you ski down, you can return to Gulmarg in no time. The chairlift takes about 11 minutes to reach.
Â
BUNNY SLOPES
In the meadows of Gulmarg, which is usually covered with a thick blanket of snow with barely any patch of earth visible, there are bunny slopes doable for beginners.Â
Â
These are wide and easy slopes that are open throughout the day and sometimes during the night. There are two button lifts along these slopes. However, one has to be patient with it as long queues are a common sight during the peak snow season (January & February).Â
Â
However, skiing season in Gulmarg opens from November to late March.

An avalanche patrol team/ Ski patrol team works all around the clock on Phase I and Phase II as these mountains are highly avalanche-prone. It is suggestive that one gets an instructor from the region for smooth sailing even for expert skiers.
